Fair Dealing Week 2023
Tue. Feb. 14, 2023
Fair Dealing Week is February 20-24, 2023
Fair Dealing grants Canadians the right to use copyright-protected material without explicit permission from the rights-holder under specific circumstances. It is an important part of Canada's Copyright Act and is a right that students, teachers, and professors rely on for learning and research.
To mark Fair Dealing Week, the BC Copyright Specialist Consortium and the Alberta Copyright Consortium are co-hosting two online events:
On Tuesday, February 28 11am - noon (PST) Dr. Graham Reynolds presents An Introduction to AI and Copyright in Canada, in which he will provide an introduction to current law regarding AI and copyright. He will also explore issues involving AI and copyright that might require legal reform. Register.
On Wednesday, March 1 10-11am (PST) Michal Jaworski presents 2022 Year in Review and Considerations for 2023, in which he will review relevant copyright legislative amendments and case law from 2022. He will also discuss issues that will keep the library community busy in 2023. Register.
And while you're waiting for those sessions, please feel free to revisit this excellent video from UW's Copyright Office breaking down why you should care about fair dealing!
